Story
The race is finally about to get underway at Mt. Useful when everyone is excited to see Santa arrive to see the festivities. Santa is happy to see his old friend Herb again, but Marge warns Santa to take it easy as he’s still recuperating from major surgery. Hibbert shows up with the results from the lab on the object that was removed from Santa’s head, and confirms that it was a piece of a very old Christmas ornament. Lisa sees that it’s a missing piece of Herb’s Christmas ornament found at the crime scene, but… Herb is nowhere to be seen. Suddenly Marge realizes that she knows what happened.
There’s no time to explain… Marge needs a way to track Herb and Burns says his hounds can do it, so everyone piles into Burns’ creepy bone sleigh. Literally everyone. Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Santa, Herb, Mary, Burns, Smithers, Wiggum, Brockman, the Nutcracker… The whole gang is on Herb’s scent.
Herb hides in a warehouse, but there’s no denying the scent of Christmas tree or the glinting of ornaments in the light…so they track him down quickly. When they all corner him in the warehouse, Marge lays out the whole thing, which she gets Manacek to mostly explain, revealing that Manacek has been helping this whole time too. Marge reveals that Herb’s story may have lined up with the blood pattern at the crime scene, but they forgot to check… the SAP pattern! They explain that Herb and Mary are, in fact, related and in it together. Mary is Herb’s niece. Herb was sick of Santa taking all the glory every Christmas, and Mary needed a scoop on a story for her new true crime show, so they plotted together to take out Santa for both their gain.
Wiggum’s hauls both of them to the slammer and the sleigh race beings. Homer and Bart’s upgrades to the snowmobile prove to be too much for the other contestants, and they win the race. But in the end, Santa seems to be feeling much better and willing to take over again just in time for Christmas. Homer is gutted, but feels relieved once Lisa explains the math of how fast you must go in order to deliver presents to every house in the world in one night.

Story
At Moe’s Tavern, Moe is in the Christmas spirit and serving eggnog, which gets Marge promptly drunk as they talk to Moe about Snake’s alibi. Up on Mt. Useful, Homer tries to figure out how to keep an eye on Maggie while they’re training for the sleigh race, so he pawns her off for babysitting with the Gnome-in-the-Home who is there doing promotions for their sponsorship of the race. Meanwhile, Mary and Herb are there interviewing the racers for more true crime footage. Smithers is concerned that Burns comes across as evil no matter what he says, and that he may get painted as the culprit by Mary’s slick work in the editing room.
When Homer discovers that everyone else’s sleighs can fly, he and Bart hatch a plan to soup up their snowmobile with a combination of nitrous, rocket fuel, and magic stolen from Burns’ creepy dragon bone sleigh.
Meanwhile, Santa has finally awoken from his coma back at the hospital and Hibbert has asked Marge and Lisa to come by to take Santa off his hands because he’s being very annoying. When they arrive, they can see that Santa is not himself, he’s acting very strange, and Hibbert confirms that he has something lodged deep in his brain from the attack. They convince Hibbert to operate immediately to remove the foreign object, which he begrudgingly agrees to. With the object removed and Santa back to his normal jolly self, they agree to take him for an outing while he recuperates, so they bring him to Mt. useful to see all the people racing to help deliver presents in his absence this year.

Story
Wiggum suggest, without evidence, that the culprit is probably Snake, just cuz he does most of the other crimes. Lisa doesn’t buy it so Wiggum just starts guessing other names. Without any solid leads, Marge, Lisa, and Herb decide to stop for lunch at Krusty Burger and review the case. While at Krusty Burger they run into Mary Tannenbaum, a big city movie producer from The Heartmark Channel who is trying to make a pivot into true crime shows and is in town looking into the Santa case. Marge and Lisa agree to let her tag along when she offers to make them huge stars. Herb wants to be in the show too, seeing as how he was attacked alongside Santa, but he doesn’t get much traction from Mary who reveals that focus group audiences don’t respond well to sentient arboreal beings. Mary begins tagging along, filming footage of the investigation as Marge and Lisa question people, and they all head up to Mt. Useful to start questioning people competing in the sleigh race as they have an obvious motive, to take Santa’s job. Homer is happy that his family has come to cheer him on, but is shocked when Lisa begins to question him on his whereabouts on the night of Santa’s attack.
Finally Wiggum shows up on Mt. Useful to enter the sleigh race himself, angering Lisa who believes he has more important things to do, like investigate the attack on Santa. But Wiggum says he already solved that whole Santa thing. It was Snake, which he knows because Snake had a part-time job at Santa’s Village, where Santa was attacked, and even worked on that very night. DUN – Dun – duuuuuuunnnnnnn….
They go to question Snake who says that he left work at Santa’s Village before the attack even happened, and he has a weirdly specific list of details for his alibi, including the exact time he went to Moe’s for an after-work beer.
